Ever since he made his professional debut in 1998, Roger Federer has been a major name in tennis. The Swiss Maestro currently holds the record for the most number of Grand Slam titles among male tennis players, with 20 trophies. But since he has not won a Grand Slam tournament since 2018, many have been wondering if it is his time to hang the racket.

Federer has no plans to retire… yet
It seems Federer himself does not have retirement in his immediate plans. He said that while it has become tradition for older players to retire by their mid-30s, he wants to exit the tennis court the right way. He insists that he wants to go at it “by feel,” which means it can happen anytime. He further explained that he is still enjoying his “life on the road” and he is looking forward to facing many opponents in the court.

The Swiss said that his retirement plans will depend on many factors, including his family. Previously, the Swiss Maestro said that if his family requests that he walk away from tennis, he would greatly consider doing so.

He also referenced his health as another consideration for his retirement. While he is less likely to get injuries than the two other players in the Big Three (Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal), he has been having more physical health issues in the past few years. In this year’s U.S. Open quarterfinals, Federer had to bow down to Grigor Dimitrov because of a back injury.

Retirement rumors
Talks about his retirement have been following Federer almost everywhere he goes this year. In February when he announced that he will be making his first clay-court season appearance since 2016, a lot of people thought that he wanted to win the trophy in Roland Garros one last time. Of the four Grand Slam tournaments, he had the most dismal record in the French Open where he only has one title.

Even the people surrounding the world No.3 have been asked about his retirement. His agent, Tony Godsick, already told the media that even the Swiss Maestro does not know. He, however, echoed his client’s explanation regarding his family and his health.

What will Federer do in retirement?
While he is still not sure about the date of his retirement, Federer already has some ideas in mind of what he will do. He earlier said that he wants to help teach younger players to engage in the sport. He even said that he can see himself and rival Nadal teaching young players together in Spain’s Rafa Nadal Academy.
